RSHE

‘Today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. In this environment, children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. ‘

RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education) is a statutory requirement for all schools. At Castledon, RSHE is at the heart of the personal development of all of our young people.  We  consult with parents/carers, pupils, staff and trustees yearly with regard to our RSHE policy.

Our RSHE curriculum is planned using the PSHE association SEND framework which ensures that we are meeting the DfE requirements. We then adapt this accordingly to ensure we are meeting the needs of each cohort.  The learning is progressive, so themes will be revisited as pupils move through the academy.

At Castledon we recognise the importance of good quality RSHE for SEND learners as they develop the skills and knowledge to make informed choices about their wellbeing, health and relationships, in all contexts, including online. This is essential to prepare them for a successful adult life.

How is RSHE Delivered?

In Key Stage 1-3 RSHE is timetabled twice weekly and incorporates the PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) themes such as British Values. Religious education is delivered through half-termly drop-down days.

In Key Stages 4 and 5 RSHE is delivered once a week with a separate PSHE lesson each week to cover religious education, democracy, the rule of law and diversity - giving our young people an insight into what it means to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Great Britain.

Across the academy, we regularly audit the needs of our pupils and will plan and deliver tailored lessons, workshops or drop-down days to address particular needs - for example, social media use or sexual health.
