Curriculum Intent Statement

In Art, pupils explore visual, tactile and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity, and learn to appreciate the physical finesses and demands of being an artist. They learn to appreciate and value images and to understand the contexts in which they were made.

In Art, pupils reflect critically on their own and other people’s work, judging quality, value and meaning. They learn to think and act as artists, working creatively and intelligently. They develop an appreciation of art that enriches their lives.

Art is one of the great cultural touchstones of the world; one which enriches us in so many ways. Great art work reflects the changes and values in our communities and societies. Art can stimulate thought and touch deep emotions, and is integral to all forms of visual communication.

At a deeper level, Art opens our minds to new perspectives and ways of thinking. The unique relationship between the artist and the audience endlessly creates new meanings and insights, and ennobles us in our day to day lives.
