Castledon Canvey Satellite Provision

Castledon Canvey Satellite Provision

We’re really pleased to be able to share an update on our new satellite provision on Canvey Island, which is due to open in September 2026.

Following a successful public consultation, work is now well underway to create this new provision. It will provide much-needed additional places for primary aged pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) across South Essex.

What is the Canvey Satellite?

The satellite will be part of Castledon School and College and will reflect the same ethos, values and approach as our main site in Wickford.

It will start small, opening with a small number of classes, and will grow over time to around 40 places. As with the main school, pupils will be grouped based on their needs rather than age, and the focus will be on supporting communication, engagement, independence and regulation.

The setting

The provision will be based on a site shared with William Read Primary School. Although on the same site, it will be a separate school, with its own classrooms, facilities and staff team.

We are developing the environment carefully so that it meets the needs of pupils with complex learning, communication and sensory needs. This includes specialist spaces and access to both indoor and outdoor learning opportunities.

Working with families

We know how important it is to get the right placement for each child. We will work closely with families and the Local Authority as part of the admissions process.

Where needed, we’ll also have open and honest conversations about whether the main site or the satellite is the best fit and this can be reviewed over time if things change.

Looking ahead

This is a really positive step in increasing specialist provision locally. We’re looking forward to developing the satellite and working with families to create a setting where pupils feel safe, supported and able to thrive.
